TOURNAMENT REPORT
(Graham Govan / Tournament Coordinator)
The Thirty-Eight Essendon Annual Junior Tournament held during the first week of the September school holidays was very successful, with over 200 young people contesting 19 events on offer. The tournament was hampered by some poor weather, with frequent strong winds, very little sunshine and three rain delays, causing some finals to be completed a day later than normal. However, many good quality matches were played and much good sportsmanship displayed, with virtually no need for any referee intervention.
In most events, the number one seed gained the winners trophy despite some very close results. However the biggest upset of the tournament was in the girls 12 and Under Singles, where Geelong girl Georgia Kelly defeated the local hot favorite, Sarah Govan in an exciting final 7-5, 6-4.

There were two outstanding performers over the tournament. Essendon club member Tom Russell surprised even the local club supporters with his amazing endurance over the week to win three events. The Boys 16 and under singles and doubles and the Boys 18 and under singles. The latter convincingly 6-1, 6-0. At the presentations he was named the 'Iron Man' having played fifteen sets of tennis over two days.
He was, however upstaged by ten-year-old Sydenham boy Lucas Vuradin, who wen one better, winning the boys 10 and under singles and doubles and the Boys 11 and under singles and doubles. Lucas claimed all four events quite comfortably. IS HE OUR NEXT LAYTON HEWITT?
