The Essendon Retired Men's Tennis Club decided in mid 2007, that it would like to sponsor a child through the World Vision Child Sponsorship Program. Each player was invited to to donate $1 a week for this purpose. (This was deemed to be sufficient to meet the $43 per month cost). World Vision organized Kevin Santiago Suarez, who lives in Bogota, Columbia, as the sponsored child. Kevin was 8 at the time and has now just turn 11. |

| The money the group provides, helps Kevin and his family. It also provides some help to the local community through improved health and education services. The club sends some additional greetings - e.g. birthday cards - and some school supplies to Kevin, from time to time. The club receives reports on Kevin's school progress and health development. | |||||||||||
| The men of our club have been very generous. Donations have well and truly surpassed the $1 a week. Sponsorship is currently paid to October 2011. In addition, the men have been able to assist other causes and emergency situations; e.g. Victorian Bush fire Appeal $231.70, World Vision Multiple 10 Project $200 - this project had a further sponsorship whereby every dollar donated had $10 value for humanitarian aid, so, the donation was worth $2,000 -, Very Special Kids $101, Children in Need $120, Haiti Appeal $100. | |||||||||||
| The men feel they can well afford to support these projects and are pleased to have been able to assist beyond their original intention. | |||||||||||
